Industrial Wastewater Treatment and Recycling
According to the Water Resources Agency of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, each year Taiwan receives around 60 billion cubic meters of water in rainfall, but over 80% of that water is lost to the sea. Thus, even though Taiwan has very high rainfall, the average per capita water consumption is only one-seventh of the world average.
In recent years, the impact of global climate change has resulted in more severe and frequent water shortage in Taiwan, which is complicated by the increase of over 15% in industrial water consumption between 1983 and 2001. Due to the water shortage, the ensuing jump in water tariff is sure to greatly impact the industrial sector in Taiwan. Moreover, the Taiwan EPA has recently amended the effluent standards for industrial zones’ sewer systems, which will tighten the wastewater treatment plants’ effluent COD, BOD and SS standards in phases in 2011 and 2016 respectively. These developments have forced the industry in Taiwan to treat the enhancement of industrial water consumption and wastewater treatment efficiency as major issues which need to be properly addressed.
