Organic Waste to Energy and Composting Treatment
Currently, the surging global demand for energy, rising energy prices and the trends to reduce carbon emissions are all encouraging factors for the continuing development of renewable energy. As biomass energy is the world’s fourth largest source of energy and can be considered carbon neutral, it will be increasingly important for Taiwan which relies on imported energy to meet 99% of its energy demand. Taiwan generates a huge amount of organic waste (e.g., kitchen waste, human waste, sludge from swine farm wastewater treatment plants and municipal wastewater treatment plants, and garden waste) daily. As these wastes are very high in organic contents, if they are treated in composting or anaerobic digestion processes, waste reduction and stabilization can be achieved through biological degradation processes. In the end, these biological treatment options can result in reduced environmental pollution, as well as generating compost, liquid fertilizers and biogas energy, and allow us to achieve the goals of energy and resource recycling and reuse, energy conservation and carbon emission reduction.
